Chamomile Oil

What is it ?

It is difficult to say whether it's the ominous grey clouds or the hangover from the communist regime in Hungary, but the slightly gloomy setting is in stark contrast to the brilliant blue oil that will be produced from the bobbing heads of the chamomile laid out in front of us. One hour outside Budapest lay huge fields of yellow white chamomile flowers.

Traditionally harvested by gypsies chamomile is now 'hoovered' up with large combine harvesters to be distilled in the local factory. Since the fall of agricultural co-operatives the manual workforce dwindled and many of the workers left for the city. Where as before large wooden rakes would have plucked the flowers large blue and yellow machines now efficiently collect them before they are deposited in the large cylindrical stills where the vibrant blue liquid is extracted.
